What Is an Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) Day?

When Missouri schools experience weather or emergency closures, we may use an Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) Day to keep students learning from home.  An Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) Day allows our district to continue learning when school buildings must close due to weather, emergencies, or other unexpected events. Rather than canceling school, students learn from home through review lessons designed by their teachers. These days count as regular school days and are approved by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to ensure students don’t lose valuable instructional time.

What This Means for Families

  • If an AMI day is needed, families will be notified through our district’s communication system (phone call, text, and email), as well as on our district website and social media pages.
  • Students will receive learning materials in advance—either online or in a printed packet—to complete at home.
  • To be marked present for attendance during the AMI Day, students must complete their AMI work and return it when school resumes (or submit it online if applicable).

Our Commitment
We understand that learning from home can look different for every family. Our teachers design AMI lessons that review important skills and reinforce current learning. Thank you for partnering with us to keep students learning safely and consistently—even when we can’t be together in the building.

Student AMI Assignments:
Primary/Elementary AMI Plan for Grades K-5:

  • AMI Packets will be sent home during Parent/Teacher Conferences for all AMI Days.
  • Packets will be labeled as AMI 1, AMI 2, AMI 3, etc. so you will know what they need to work on.
  • Please keep these packets for your child to work on at home in the event that we have an AMI day due to inclement weather.
  • Teachers will also communicate at the time of the AMI day.
  • The packet must be completed and returned to your child's teacher the next day in session in order for your child to be counted on attendance as present that day.
Middle/High School AMI Plan for Grades 6-12:
  • AMI assignments will be sent out on Google Classroom from your child's teachers.
  • Students will need to complete and submit those assignments electronically (or returned to school) in order for students to be marked as "present" on attendance.
  • Teachers will be available during a scheduled time in the morning to answer questions, provide support, or assist students with their AMI work.
  • Assignments during AMI days will be posted by 9:00 a.m. for the day.
  • Students will use the Google Meet Link provided by the teacher in their Google Classroom during the scheduled office hour time with their teachers.
We would like to thank all parents and guardians for their partnership during our AMI day!
